A baby despite cancer: a miracle came true for Sabine

For his family, Anton is pure happiness. But for many women suffering from cancer, the little boy also represents great hope, as he is the first baby to be born in Germany following ovarian tissue reimplantation.

Anton is Sabine and Marc's pride and joy. For doctors, he is a triumph of science.

Around 10 years ago, 25-year-old Sabine from Ludwigsstadt was diagnosed with lymphoma. When she had a setback after chemotherapy, she had ovarian tissue removed as this was her only chance of having a baby later on.

A miracle: Anton was conceived naturally

After a tough battle with further chemotherapy and stem cell therapies, Sabine was considered cured in 2010 and had the frozen tissue reimplanted. What happened next is almost a miracle: Anton, who was born on August 7, 2011 by caesarean section in perfect health, was conceived naturally. A stroke of luck for which there are no words.

Cryopreservation

Aggressive chemotherapy and radiotherapy attack the reproductive organs. In cryopreservation, ovarian tissue is surgically removed and frozen at 196 degrees Celsius. Most of the cells are fully functional after thawing.
