The code check for cosmetics reveals a lot about the contents and composition of your beauty product. But do you even understand the small print on tubes and jars? We explain!

Smells good, looks good, but what else - apart from fragrances - does skincare actually contain?

1. cosmetic ingredients: Where exactly are they?

Turn around once, please! The cosmetic ingredients are always listed on the back as so-called INCI - in descending order of quantity. The mostly incomprehensible technical terms sometimes cause confusion rather than clarification in the cosmetics code check. The Internet provides a quick and easy breakdown (e.g. at www.haut.de/service/inci).

2 Is natural cosmetics safe?

It must be certified. Only products with a seal of approval (e.g. BDIH, Ecocert, NaTru) are truly natural cosmetics that have been tested for allergy risk and effectiveness, cosmetics that have not been tested on animals or cosmetics that are vegan.

3. are silicones real beautifiers?

In part, they really are. Silicones are chemical building blocks that are only used externally. They make skin and hair supple, but only form a film on and over the surface. However, they are not biodegradable.

4 Codecheck cosmetics: Why are there products without perfume?

Fragrances can irritate the skin, which can manifest itself as itching, a burning sensation or even in the form of a rash or blisters. If you have sensitive skin, you can prevent potential problems with fragrance-free care products (e.g. in pharmacies).

5 What are parabens?

Parabens are chemical preservatives that are used in cosmetics, medicines and foods to make them (more) durable. However, they are also suspected of causing allergies. If you want to be sure, you can find a list of parabens at www.kosmetikanalyse.de.

6 What do emulsifiers do?

You should also pay attention to this in the cosmetics code check. These additives are used to mix two immiscible liquids, such as water and oil, into a homogeneous mass. However, they also make the skin more porous and more permeable to active ingredients and harmful substances.

7. are there hormones in skincare?

No, there is no need to be afraid of the discredited chemical active ingredients that can have an effect on the hormone system.
