It doesn't always have to be expensive hair treatments from hairdressers. You can also make your own very easily and individually for every hair type.

Things to know about hair treatments

There are a lot of influences that can put a lot of strain on your hair and make it dry and brittle. These include strong winds, hot temperatures and stress. You can make your own hair conditioner to ensure that your hair is still sufficiently nourished. You will be confronted with a wide variety of products in drugstores, but a homemade hair treatment is just as effective and usually cheaper. When using a hair conditioner, you will notice the first effect in the shower, as your hair will immediately feel softer and smoother. They are also smoother and therefore easier to comb. Hair treatments also provide the hair with important nutrients, which are essential for its health. Compared to nourishing shampoos, hair conditioners consist exclusively of ingredients that are specifically used to care for the hair. They therefore have no cleansing effect, which is why a regular hair shampoo is usually used first when showering and then a hair conditioner is applied.

Production of hair treatments for various types of hair damage

If you suffer from brittle hair in particular, this recipe for a homemade hair conditioner is ideal for you. Place the following ingredients in a bowl and mix well with a fork:

- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon of honey
- 150 g yoghurt
- 2 tbsp jojoba oil
- 2 drops of wheat germ oil

Then heat the treatment briefly in the microwave - but make sure that the egg does not solidify. Now you can distribute it through your hair. Leave the mixture in for at least 10 minutes and then wash your hair briefly with shampoo so that the homemade hair treatment is completely washed out.

If you have oily hair, you will need different ingredients for a DIY hair treatment. All you need is 2 glasses of water and 1 tablespoon of sea salt. Mix the two together well and massage the mixture into your hair. After 15 minutes, rinse your hair with warm water. The salt has a degreasing effect and reduces sebum production.

If you are the type of person who suffers from split ends again shortly after a visit to the hairdresser, you can also make your own hair treatment. Coconut oil has proven to be very effective. To make your own hair treatment, take 50 ml of coconut oil and the juice of half a lemon, heat the coconut oil briefly and mix in the lemon juice. Massage the hair treatment into your hair and leave it on for 30 minutes for optimum results. Then rinse your hair with warm water.

Additional tips on hair treatments

DIY hair treatments for oily hair and split ends contain ingredients that can be mixed together and stored in advance. This means you don't have to start preparing the appropriate treatment just before washing your hair. However, this is not completely possible with the egg and yoghurt version, as these contain perishable foods.

When using homemade hair treatments, it is important that you adhere to the application times. At a minimum of 10 minutes, these are far longer than the average for commercially available treatments. However, the natural ingredients need this time to develop their full strength. Regular use of the treatments is also important, as your hair needs some time to regenerate and strengthen. You should therefore use a hair treatment at least twice a week.

The biggest advantages of homemade hair treatments are the cost savings and the protection of the environment and your hair. Due to the simple ingredients, the production of the treatments is much cheaper than the sometimes very expensive products on the market. In addition, many drugstore treatments use chemical ingredients, which are not always better than natural ones. What's more, these chemical additives end up in the drain and therefore in the environment. Finally, most of the ingredients for a homemade hair treatment are staple foods and there is a very good chance that they are available in your household anyway. So you can also make your own hair treatment on the spur of the moment.
