Swollen eyes due to lymph congestion: recognize and act

Do you get enough sleep, have no allergies and yet you often wake up in the morning with swollen eyes? This could be due to lymphatic fluid that is not draining properly, causing puffy eyes.

Lymph fluid flows through the vessels of our lymphatic system and the lymph nodes in between. At best, it transports nutrients and cleanses our body of all kinds of waste, bacteria and toxins, which are filtered in the lymph nodes and removed from the body. Unlike our blood system, however, it is not driven by a pump such as the heart, but by movements of the body, muscles and breathing.

What happens if the lymphatic system doesn't work?

If the lymphatic system is not working properly, the lymph nodes with their filter and defense cells also stop working and lymph congestion occurs. This can lead to many different symptoms. Among other things, the slowed lymph flow can cause swelling (oedema) in the feet, hands or face.

What to do with swollen eyes in the morning?

Due to the lack of movement and the horizontal position we adopt during sleep, many people experience a build-up of lymphatic fluid in the eye area in particular. They wake up with swollen eyes, which slowly subside over the course of the day. An elevated position of the head can be helpful here, preventing the fluid from accumulating here during the night.

However, diet, lack of fluids and lack of exercise can also play a role. If the symptoms become chronic, you should consult a doctor.
