Tattoo removal: the best method

A rose adorns the arm and a cobra winds around the shin. Many Germans have tattoos like these and many more on their bodies. But not everyone is happy with their pictures. They are badly engraved. Or the motifs are out of fashion again. After all, tattoos are also subject to trends. Floral patterns above the coccyx, which were so popular years ago, are something many women want to get rid of. But what are the best methods for removing a tattoo? Dermatologist Prof. Raulin from Karlsruhe answers the most important questions.

So that nothing hurts, the doctor applies an anesthetic to the skin beforehand.

Is it true that laser tattoo removal is the best method?

Yes, provided the doctor is experienced enough. However, scar tissue forms with other methods, such as skin transplantation. That's why I tend to advise patients against it.

Does the tattoo disappear completely?

That depends on the colors. Black, red, green and certain shades of blue can be removed best. They absorb the laser light particularly well. Yellow, brown and violet, on the other hand, cause problems. Patients should therefore avoid having these colors lasered. It is very important that patients always realize in advance that not everything can always be removed - even if the primary goal is for the skin to look "like new" again.

How long does it take on average until the tattoo is gone?

It can take two or three years. There must always be a break of one to two months between two sessions to allow the skin to recover. The body also has to break down the ink particles. This happens via the immune system, among other things. There is currently a lot of hype about the picosecond laser, which works very quickly.

But is it really more effective than other lasers at removing tattoos?

A study has been carried out on this. However, this could not prove that the result is better.

How do I find a good doctor?

It is advisable to ask around first, for example among friends. Who has had which experiences? Patients should also look for qualifications, such as whether the doctor is a member of the German Dermatological Laser Society. Addresses can be found at www.ddl.de. It also doesn't hurt to get a second opinion in case of doubt. If the treatment is successful, no white spots will remain.

How much does a session cost?

From around 80 euros upwards for smaller tattoos.
