Every second woman is affected at some point
First things first: everyone loses up to 100 hairs a day, and this is not at all tragic. But when it becomes more, we talk about hair loss. Unfortunately, almost every second woman comes into contact with this issue at some point in her life.
The most common cause is hereditary hair loss
In hereditary hair loss, the balance between female and male sex hormones shifts in favor of the male hormones. It usually begins from the age of 40 or around the menopause. This hereditary hair loss affects 20 to 30 percent of women and is the most common cause. However, the dermatologist can prescribe medication against it.
Rule out hypothyroidism
When hair falls out evenly all over the head, experts speak of diffuse hair loss. This can be caused by iron deficiency, thyroid dysfunction or infectious diseases. However, certain medications, crash diets, very high fever or malnutrition can also be responsible. However, the doctor can determine this with a blood test. Diffuse hair loss usually disappears again once the cause has been eliminated.
What can you do for your hair?
Experts recommend washing your hair two to three times a week. Silica (drugstore) makes the hair sprout again. And a hair treatment with apple cider vinegar stimulates blood flow to the scalp and regenerates damaged hair: mix 125 milliliters of apple cider vinegar with 500 milliliters of water and massage into the hair after washing. Do not rinse, leave to air dry.
Hairy facts
■ Each hair grows by 0.25 millimeters per day.
■ Dry hair can withstand 270 degrees Celsius, then it melts. Wet hair already suffers at 140 degrees - so blow-drying is not good for your hair.
■ A single hair can carry 100 grams.
