50 years: Happy Birthday, Queen Máxima!

Queen Máxima of the Netherlands celebrates her 50th birthday today. We show new pictures of the radiant Queen and her family.

Máxima and Willem-Alexander: a dream couple

On February 2, 2002, the civil Máxima Zorreguieta and the Dutch Prince Willem-Alexander tied the knot in a civil ceremony with around 600 guests. The church wedding immediately followed in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. Máxima wore an ivory-colored wedding dress made of Mikado silk by Valentino Couture.

Prince Willem-Alexander's decision to marry Máxima Zorreguieta, who comes from Argentina, caused a scandal in 2001: Máxima's father was a member of the controversial Videla regime. In the end, the Dutch parliament agreed to the marriage on one condition: Máxima's parents were not allowed to attend the wedding. The bitter tears that Máxima cried during her wedding ceremony are still remembered all too well.

The royal couple have three daughters: Catharina-Amalia (17), Princess Alexia (15) and Princess Ariane (14).
