Tagesschau legend Wilhelm Wieben is dead

Wilhelm Wieben died on June 13, just a few days after his 84th birthday. He presented the Tagesschau for 25 years and was one of the most famous faces of the news program.

He presented the Tagesschau since 1974

Wilhelm Wieben had been working in the Tagesschau editorial team since 1966. A short time later, he was also in front of the camera as a presenter, in 1974 for the first time for the Tagesschau at 8 pm. He presented his last edition on June 24, 1998, before leaving the show at his own request. As matter-of-factly as Wieben was known, he explained shortly after his departure from ARD: "No regrets that it is no longer the way it was for so many years."

Wieben also appeared on stage as an actor

However, he did not give up his career completely. Wieben continued to appear occasionally on German television, performed on stage as an actor, wrote books in Low German and recorded audio books. In Hamburg's "Tivoli" theater, he slipped into the role of Emperor Franz Joseph for the play "Im weißen Rössl" in the mid-90s.
