Millions of Germans have it and it is the most common allergy in industrialized countries. Sufferers are affected by the smallest pollen particles and plant pollen. The typical hay fever symptoms: Sneezing attacks, runny nose and burning eyes - often lasting for weeks and months.

Swollen mucous membranes and sneezing attacks

Experts are worried: the season for pollen allergy sufferers is starting earlier and earlier with hazelnut and alder. The first symptoms are itchy and reddened eyes and a tingling sensation in the nose. Then the mucous membranes swell, the eyes start to water, the nose is blocked and sneezing attacks occur. These are the annoying but harmless symptoms of a pollen allergy.

Hay fever can turn into allergic asthma

For those with severe reactions or who have had the allergy for a long time, hay fever can also trigger coughing, shortness of breath, bronchial asthma, gastrointestinal disorders, migraines, skin eczema and other symptoms. Medical treatment of pollen allergy is also important, as hay fever can develop into allergic asthma. The doctor carries out a so-called prick test and also knows the right treatment.

What helps against hay fever?

In the short term, nasal drops can help with a runny nose, while anti-allergic tablets or drops - known as antihistamines - can help with severe symptoms. In the long term, you should consider hyposensitization, which eliminates hay fever.
