What are the symptoms of PIMS?
Normally, children infected with Covid-19 have a mild course of the disease with few symptoms. However, there are now more and more cases of PIMS (Paediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome), amulti-inflammatory syndrome that now appears to be occurring in children in response to the coronavirus. According to researchers at Imperial College London, the most common symptoms include fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea. More than half of the children also experienced skin rashes, conjunctivitis or heart problems. PIMS syndrome is a serious illness in which more than half of the children have to be treated in intensive care. Treatment is generally successful and there is said to be hardly any secondary damage.
PIMS syndrome after corona infection
Around 168 cases of PIMS syndrome have been documented across Germany. Jakob Armann from the Clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at Dresden University Hospital told n-tv.de: "The cases clearly follow the waves of infection in Germany". Most of the cases were therefore detected in federal states with high coronavirus infection rates. According to a British study, an average of one in 5,000 children develops PIMS syndrome after being infected with the coronavirus.
According to the German Society for Pediatric Infectiology (DGPI), 195 cases of PIMS have been registered in Germany (as of 22.02.21). According to experts, the disease should occur two to four weeks after the corona infection.
