Dental implant costs: What are cheap dentures from abroad good for?

To save money, some dentists work with laboratories in the Far East. This is usually cheaper - but is it also better? And are dentists too quick to recommend dental implants? Read here what dental expert Dr. Lutz Spanka and Stiftung Warentest have to say about costs and quality from abroad!

Catastrophic standard: warning of annoying back and forth

"Germany has a very high standard when it comes to dental technology," says Dr. Lutz Spanka from the dental center "Dr. Spanka & Kollegen". He is a proven specialist with his own laboratory in Hude (Oldenburg). "The standard in other countries is often a disaster. Dentures have to be customized. This may still work for a single crown, but it is more difficult for complex dentures that have to be produced in four to ten steps. If something doesn't fit right away, there is a time-consuming back and forth." What's more: "Many production steps are now carried out by milling robots and 3D printers. This is even cheaper than dentures from China."

Dental implants: A high-risk treatment for specialists only

He also warns against only paying attention to costs and appearance. It is more important that dental implants are professionally planned and correctly anchored to the jaw. "Especially with a poor jaw, the dentures must fit securely. Otherwise the jaw will degenerate." Also note: "The doctor should be experienced in implanting and planning dentures, treat at least 150 patients per year and preferably have a 'Master of Science Implantology'." Follow-up treatment must be free of charge. The material is guaranteed for two years.

Dental implants: Costs that make patients swallow

Dental implants cost a lot - many people don't have that kind of money to spare. A dental implant consists of three parts: the actual implant, which is anchored in the jaw (approx. 1,000 euros), the intermediate part, which connects the implant and denture (approx. 200 to 300 euros) and the denture (a crown from approx. 800 euros). Statutory health insurance companies subsidize implants with approx. 450 euros. The standard material is biocompatible and stable titanium. Ceramic implants are also available, but they are more expensive. This is due to the material and the fact that, according to Dr. Spanka, they are also more difficult to work with.

Dental implant yes or no: what Stiftung Warentest advises

Dentists are only too happy to offer dental implants. However, experience shows that this is not always necessary. Now the patient is considering whether to agree. After a dental implant test, however,Stiftung Warentest advises: It's better not to say yes too quickly! This is because it found that not all dentists provide their patients with sufficient information before the procedure. In addition, not all of them suggest alternatives, such as a bridge. One doctor even recommended an implant, even though there was not enough bone in the jaw. However, this is a basic prerequisite for the artificial root to hold at all. But: neighboring teeth have to be ground down for a bridge - i.e. if they are in perfect condition, a reputable dentist does not want to destroy them. In this case, an implant (intended to stabilize the jaw) or a permanent tooth may be a better solution. Tips: If in doubt, consult several doctors - in such cases, a second or third opinion can be helpful. Also ask specifically why an implant is recommended and not a post tooth or a bridge. The dentist must justify this.

Further tips for successful dental treatment:

  • Ask why your dentist recommends an implant in particular.
  • Find out whether your jawbone or gums are at all suitable for this. If you have chronic gum inflammation, there is a high risk that you will quickly lose your replacement teeth.
  • Ask your dentist to write down their suggestion in a way that you can understand. He should also give you treatment alternatives.
  • Get a second opinion. Bring all documents with you to the appointment, for example x-rays and the treatment and cost plan.
