Digital mammography: When and for whom is the new method worthwhile?

A three-dimensional X-ray of the breast promises a better view of cancer. This can facilitate the early detection of carcinomas. With 3D mammography, malignant tumors can be detected more reliably during breast cancer screening than with the 2D technology used to date. US scientists have come to this conclusion.

How useful is 3D mammography?

Digital mammography: like a movie

Patients will not notice any difference to the previous 2D technique. The device takes a series of X-ray images, each from a different direction. These millimeter-thin sectional images are then combined to create a 3D presentation. You can scroll through the layers on the monitor, which is like a movie in which you can view the breast tissue.

Critics believe that a 2D mammogram plus ultrasound is completely sufficient to achieve an equally precise result. The health insurance does not cover the costs of around 100 euros.
