"Have diseased tonsils removed"

The tonsils are the body's health police. They are the first to recognize bacteria and therefore play an enormously important role in our health. However, if the tonsils are permanently inflamed on their own, they pose a health threat and should be removed. But how soon should the tonsils be removed? General practitioner Dr. Silvia Liebel knows the answer.

When is it advisable to have the tonsils removed?

Erika C. from Waltrop asks:

For a year now I have been getting tonsillitis, which only goes away with antibiotics - only to flare up again shortly afterwards. Should I have my tonsils removed or is there another method?

That's what general practitioner Dr. Silvia Liebel says:

If you are so often ill, there is really no alternative to having your tonsils removed. The antibiotics are obviously not able to completely eradicate the bacteria in your tonsils. Some of the pathogens have probably already become immune to the drugs. You should not wait much longer before having an operation. This is because chronically inflamed tonsils can put a strain on the whole body, including the heart.
