Why those affected can't laugh at all about certain sentences
Let's get this out of the way right away: Those affected do not lack a sense of humor. The only excuse: If you don't suffer from headaches or migraines, you probably don't know or empathize with what's going on in your body: From mild to severe headaches, which can make life difficult for days on end, to migraine attacks with vomiting as well as severe sensitivity to light and sound and visual disturbances - nothing works at all. The bad thing is that medication doesn't always help or it often takes a long time to find suitable medication. In addition, migraine tablets put a strain on the liver, which is why chronic sufferers naturally try to keep the doses low or find alternative methods for themselves. That's why you should never say these sentences when you have a headache or migraine, because you really hate them!
These sentences are a no-go for people with migraines:
1. "Are you on your period again"?
This phrase actually means: "So no sex today?" No, not today! Your partner should be able to put their own needs on the back burner. After all, we have to look after him when he has the man flu again.
2. "Aunt Ulla has always done the following ...!"
Thank you - and no, it doesn't really matter what helped Auntie Ulla. There's nothing more annoying than always hearing how well other people have supposedly got things under control. Besides, you have your own experience and ask experts who are familiar with it. Please don't give well-intentioned advice!
3. "You just need to relax more!"
Of course, headaches can be caused by tension or stress. But there are many triggers that can trigger severe migraine attacks. These include, for example, fragrances such as perfume or cigarettes. On bad days, the smallest doses of odor are enough to bring you to your knees. So please leave half-knowledge behind!
4 "Why don't you take a tablet?"
As if you wouldn't think of it yourself! But: in order not to put unnecessary strain on the body and especially the liver, headache sufferers try to avoid medication as much as possible. Headaches and migraines often accompany sufferers for many years, if not a lifetime. It is therefore obvious that medication should be used with caution.
5 "Typical woman!"
Women are actually said to suffer from migraines three times as often as men. According to a US study, the protein CGRP produced in the nervous system could be the reason. In this case, you can of course say, right, typical woman - but anyone who says something like that is simply not taking the sick person seriously. Comforting chocolate or flowers would be appropriate here.
