More than 40 million adults in Germany wear glasses. Of these, 36 percent have to wear them all the time. 28 percent need a visual aid occasionally, for example for reading or driving. Women have worse eyesight than men: 67 percent of women and 59 percent of men wear glasses. But there are now a number of ways to get rid of glasses - for good! We tell you the latest methods for getting by without glasses in the long term.
Lens replacement
For all visual defects. In refractive lens replacement, the natural lens is replaced by an artificial lens. Ultrasound waves or the more gentle femtolaser liquefy the body's own lens, which is sucked out and replaced with a slightly smaller artificial lens. The operation is also used for cataracts and is covered by the health insurance. The procedure costs around 3,000 eurosper eye.
Camra
For all those who suffer from presbyopia and do not want to wear glasses: With the Kamra implant, a 0.005 millimeter thin black plastic disc with 8,500 very fine holes is placed over the cornea of the non-dominant eye. The disk reduces the pupil like the aperture in a camera - you can see much more clearly. Cost: 3,000 euros, not covered by health insurance.
Relex Smile
The term "smile" means "Small Incision Lenticule Extraction" - this treatment only requires a tiny incision in the upper cornea of the eye. The procedure is good for patients with dry eyes, it is gentle and painless. It treats short-sightedness of up to -10 diopters and astigmatism of up to 5 diopters. Costs: up to 2,600 euros.
Lasik
For all visual defects. The cornea is shaped by laser so that it has the correct curvature and visual acuity is optimized. The insurance company does not pay the 1,500 euros per eye.
