The pathogens settle in the nasopharynx. One in ten people are carriers of the bacteria, but do not notice it, as a meningococcal infection does not always break out. The pathogens can easily be transmitted through coughing, sneezing or kissing.
What exactly is meningococcus?
They are bacteria. There are twelve strains of bacteria worldwide, five of which are present in our country. A meningococcal infection is a serious illness that can become life-threatening within a few hours. The bacteria usually cause a purulent inflammation of the meninges, known as meningitis, and more rarely blood poisoning.
What symptoms do those affected by a meningococcal infection develop?
The symptoms are often unspecific and resemble flu. Typical signs may include fever, vomiting, cramps, irritability or drowsiness. Anyone can contract a meningococcal infection. However, it most frequently affects babies in their first year of life, small children or adolescents. A weakened immune system and smoking can also increase susceptibility.
Can the infection be easily treated and cured?
Even if a meningococcal infection is suspected, patients must go to hospital immediately. The infection is treated there with antibiotics. Sick people are isolated for up to 24 hours after admission and the start of treatment to protect others from infection.
What is the best way to protect yourself from infection?
The Standing Committee on Vaccination recommends vaccination between the ages of 12 and 23 months. If this has been missed during this period, it should definitely be caught up on.
