The first major study to investigate the influence of fibroids on the psyche shows just how great the fear of the growths is. It was carried out by the Charité in Berlin together with the Martin Luther Hospital in Berlin. A total of 730 patients were surveyed.
The fear is often unfounded
The result: many fear that the fibroids will grow very large. Or that the uterus will have to be removed because of them. However, these fears are often unfounded. Fibroids are usually treatable.
Myoma treatment and therapies
There are many different therapies available today. Which one is suitable depends, among other things, on how large the growth is - or whether a woman still wants to have children.
The blood supply must be cut off
During myoma embolization, tiny plastic particles are injected into the vessels that supply the myoma with blood. The growth is effectively "starved out". Focused ultrasound therapy is one of the newer procedures. High-frequency sound waves heat the fibroid tissue, causing it to shrink. The first statutory health insurance providers pay or cover the costs on a case-by-case basis.
Drug treatment is also possible, for example with the active ingredient Ulipristal acetate. The aim is to block the hormone progesterone so that the fibroid shrinks again.
