Spider phobia: therapy with propranolol

Dutch researchers have now come to this conclusion, using the following method in a study: first, the phobic is confronted with a tarantula for two minutes. He then takes a tablet containing the substance propranolol, which is also found in antihypertensives. And the spider soon loses its terror. This is because propranolol in the right dosage virtually erases the fear from his memory.

Effect lasts for a year

This effect lasts for around twelve months. Behavioral therapy is one of the common treatment methods. Here, the therapist first tries to find out the cause. Later, the patient has to face the fear trigger in several sessions. Anyone who shies away from swimming pools due to aquaphobia, for example, should gradually familiarize themselves with the pool.
