5 foods you shouldn't eat if you have thyroid disease

There are foods that you should avoid if you have thyroid disease. Studies have shown that certain compounds in cabbage can lead to goitre. It is generally known that goitre is usually caused by iodine deficiency. The goitre can be clearly recognized from the outside by the enlargement of the neck - but it is actually an enlargement of the thyroid gland (diffuse enlargement). One or more nodules may also form in the thyroid gland. You should avoid these 5 foods:

  • Cabbage
  • mustard
  • Horseradish
  • radishes
  • Bitter almonds

You should only eat soy products in moderation because soy can also upset your hormone balance.

These foods are good for the thyroid gland

Iodine-containing products should be a regular part of your diet, as the thyroid gland needs iodine to function properly. Algae and seaweed are the frontrunners. However, if you have a highly active thyroid gland, you should discuss the correct amount with your doctor, as iodine intake should only be limited in this case. These foods are also good sources of the trace element:

  • Sea fish
  • peanuts
  • broccoli
  • spinach
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Dairy products
