The most common cause is hereditary hair loss
In hereditary hair loss, the balance between female and male sex hormones shifts in favor of the male hormones. It usually begins from the age of 40 or around the menopause. This hereditary hair loss affects 20 to 30 percent of women and is the most common cause. What can be done about this type of hair loss? The dermatologist can prescribe medication against it.
Rule out hypothyroidism
When hair falls out evenly all over the head, experts speak of diffuse hair loss. This can be caused by iron deficiency, thyroid dysfunction or infectious diseases. However, certain medications, crash diets, very high fever or malnutrition can also be responsible. What to do with diffuse hair loss? Have a blood test done by your doctor. Diffuse hair loss usually disappears again once the cause has been eliminated.
