CBD oil: what's behind the trendy active ingredient from the cannabis plant

Beauty products with hemp as an ingredient have been all the rage for some time - now everyone is talking about cannabidiol oil (CBD oil for short) and its amazing benefits. But wait a minute! And isn't it perhaps questionable? We wanted to get to the bottom of this in more detail and clarify ...

The basics: How CBD is extracted

"Three factors play a role here," says Mario Eimuth, Managing Director of Adrexpharma, which sells products containing CBD oil on the German market. "The most important: according to the WHO's reclassification, CBD is not a drug and its use is not harmful to health. Many doctors also rely on the healing effects of the cannabis plant." What's more: In the USA, stars like Gwyneth Paltrow swear by CBD. "It helps me with stress and anxiety," Jennifer Aniston recently revealed. It's clear that many people in this country are also curious. But what exactly is CBD? In contrast to cosmetic hemp seed oil, which - as the name suggests - is obtained exclusively from the seeds of the plant, CBD comes from the flowers of the hemp plant. Both substances contain only a very small proportion of the intoxicating substance THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). CBD is generally hydrophobic, i.e. water-soluble, but lipophilic, i.e. soluble in fat - so it requires a carrier oil. There are CBD products that use hemp seed oil as a carrier, while other manufacturers use olive oil as a base. Incidentally, cannabidiol oil is considered a dietary supplement and is therefore freely available in pharmacies, drugstores and online in Germany.

CBD as a therapy in medicine and beauty

A wide range of indications Current studies suggest that CBD can be used positively in many ways: It is considered antibacterial and anti-inflammatory and can therefore help with skin problems such as acne, psoriasis or neurodermatitis. It also has a pain-relieving, calming and stabilizing effect.

Hollywood ladies, for example, swear by using CBD oil to prevent aching feet caused by walking too long in high heels. Anyone who sleeps badly or suffers from nervous restlessness should also give the trend oil a chance. And even in the traditional medical field - for example, for complaints caused by inflammatory nerve diseases such as MS - CBD oil is said to bring relief.

How is CBD oil used?

The right dosage Mario Eimuth recommends the so-called "escalation method", as this is a gentle way of finding out which amount is best suited to the individual. "For example, start with three drops three times a day, observe how the body reacts and increase the dose until the desired effects are noticeable," advises the professional. There are two different types of application: As drops, CBD oil is placed directly under the tongue. This allows the product to enter the bloodstream quickly as it is absorbed through the oral mucosa. Alternatively, CBD oil is available in capsule form - the effect starts a little later because the tablets first have to be metabolized by the stomach.

How CBD oil can help you sleep

Do you toss and turn at night and just can't get any rest? If you don't want to take sleeping pills straight away, you can turn to products containing natural cannabidiol oil. The extract binds to receptors in the body, such as those for serotonin, and has a calming effect on stress and restlessness - when our thoughts prevent us from sleeping.
