Dehydrated? How much water do I need to drink?

Water is essential for life and also keeps us crisp and fresh. But if you drink too much, you deprive your body of salts and minerals. So how much is enough?

1.5 to 4 liters: What is the right amount of water?

Hollywood stars are known to drink liters of water - as a natural anti-aging remedy, because lots of water is supposed to keep you super young. Of course, we know that a 50- or 60-year-old can hardly look 30 just by drinking water. But it's true that plenty of moisture makes for plump skin - both inside and out. As we are made up of around 90 percent water, drinking a lot or a little definitely makes a difference to our appearance.

However, drinking too much water also flushes important minerals and salts out of the body, which is not good either. No wonder we're confused about the 1.5 liters (recommended by the German Nutrition Society) to 4 liters (for beauty).

Dehydrated? A small but effective trick makes it visible

You don't need to drink 3 to 4 liters or even more. Exceptions are people who do strenuous sports or work in strenuous jobs. You also drink more in summer because you naturally sweat more. You need to replenish your water reserves. We recommend performance water or mineral water, but also cold iced tea creations (preferably without sugar) or juice spritzers. However, fluids are not only absorbed by drinking, fresh fruit and vegetables also provide us with fluids. Alcohol, however, dehydrates the body!

So the question is: am I drinking enough? And there's an easy way to find out: Lift the skin on the back of your hand with two fingers and hold it briefly. If the skin immediately becomes smooth again after you let go, everything is fine. If it stays for longer, you should drink urgently.

Don't forget: water is vital for our bodies and dehydration, i.e. a lack of fluids, can severely weaken the entire body, especially in older people. Headaches, dizziness, slow digestion and poor concentration are just some of the effects.
