Donating blood against high blood pressure? You even get paid for it!

Everyone knows this from old movies: to help a patient, the doctor performs last-minute bloodletting. In other words, he draws a certain amount of blood from the body through a vein. This ancient natural healing method has been known since ancient times and is still used by some alternative practitioners, for example to treat varicose veins. Today, scientists are testing the effectiveness of blood donations against high blood pressure.

A third of the world's population has high blood pressure

Conventional blood donation is similar to bloodletting, except that the red juice is later used for transfusions to save human lives. Now researchers at the Charité hospital in Berlin wanted to know what effect blood donations have on high blood pressure. After all, a third of the world's population suffers from it.

Blood donations help against high blood pressure!

To get an answer to their question, the scientists repeatedly checked the blood pressure of over 290 men and women in a study. They also donated blood up to four times over a year, about 500 ml each time. It soon became clear that donating blood helps against high blood pressure and blood pressure improved! The upper value fell by an average of 17 mmHg and the lower value by 12 mmHg. However, it had no effect on normal or low values. It is not yet clear why this effect occurred at all. The great thing about this "therapy" for high blood pressure is that blood donors are often reimbursed, for example in university hospitals. In this case, around 20 to 25 euros per donation are included. But often only from the second session onwards.
