What to do in case of acute sinusitis?

It starts with a simple cold. Not too bad. But for some, such an infection develops into sinusitis, which can last for several weeks. Typical symptoms of sinusitis are headaches and pain in the forehead and jaw area. What is the best way to treat sinusitis?

Medication for sinusitis

A nasal spray containing cortisone is often prescribed for sinusitis: It inhibits the inflammation and thus reduces the swelling of the mucous membrane in the sinuses. However, it takes a few days for the effect to set in.

Other medications can alleviate the symptoms, but cannot shorten the duration of sinusitis. These include the painkillers ASA (acetylsalicylic acid, for example in Aspirin) and paracetamol as well as decongestant nasal sprays (decongestants). These sprays have an immediate effect: they reduce the swelling of the mucous membrane and ensure better nasal breathing in the short term. However, they do not have an anti-inflammatory effect.

Home remedies for sinusitis

In addition, saline solutions (available as a nasal spray, for example) can reduce the swelling of the mucous membrane and loosen the secretions. Rinsing the nose with salt water can also provide relief. Many people try their luck with steam inhalation, usually with the addition of camomile or peppermint. Such home remedies for sinusitis are at least beneficial, but there are no scientific studies on the advantages and disadvantages. The same applies to infrared radiation.
