Why yoga is so good for detoxing

Our bodies are exposed to many toxic influences every day - from environmental toxins to industrially produced foods and the constant stress of modern life. When the alkaline-acid balance in the body tips and the body becomes over-acidic, we feel tired, fall ill more often, our skin becomes blemished and unsightly cellulite dimples increase. That's why it's important to detox regularly, and that's where yoga comes in. Because yoga optimally supports the body and mind in detoxifying on all levels.

Wring out the body with twists

Of course, every yoga class stimulates blood circulation and metabolism and thus helps the body to detoxify. However, there are also certain yoga exercises that specifically improve the body's ability to eliminate toxins. Twists and "pretzel" exercises such as the eagle, for example, activate the abdominal organs (liver, kidneys, spleen, stomach and intestines) by wringing them out and then supplying them with fresh, nutrient-rich blood. Twists and exercises in a prone position also stimulate digestion: Food is digested more quickly and therefore does not start to ferment, producing significantly less waste products.

Detoxifying through breathing

Our hectic lifestyles lead many people to breathe quickly and shallowly. However, deep breathing is essential for detoxifying the body. Yoga helps here on different levels: On the one hand, yoga has an overall relaxing effect (see below). On the other hand, yoga places great emphasis on harmonious breathing in line with the movements - yoga teachers repeatedly draw the attention of yoga practitioners to the breath, which increases their awareness of their own breathing and sometimes even improves their breathing in everyday life. In addition, breathing exercises are taught in almost every yoga class, which have a strong detoxifying effect due to the (almost) complete emptying of the lungs.

Yoga reduces stress

Many people think that the body only becomes acidic due to poor nutrition, too much alcohol or too little exercise. They often forget how toxic stress is for the body. This is why stress reduction is an important part of any detoxification treatment. And yoga is the perfect way to relax: For one thing, the mindful, focused movement of yoga reduces stress hormones. In addition, the calm breathing during yoga activates the parasympathetic nervous system, a part of the nervous system responsible for relaxation. Yoga meditation also calms the mind. And the explicit relaxation phases in yoga, for example the classic final relaxation at the end of every yoga class, then dispel the last bit of stress.
