Pimples in the genital area: 3 possible causes

Ingrown hairs: If the pimples occur mainly after shaving intimate areas, this is a possible cause. Shaving can cause small skin injuries in which bacteria or germs can colonize. The result: inflammation of the hair roots.

Sexually transmitted diseases: Pimples in the genital area can also be caused by a sexually transmitted disease. If they occur after unprotected sex, you should consult a gynecologist. Pimples in the genital area can be caused by syphilis, genital herpes or fungal infections, for example.

Other causes: As the vaginal area is very sensitive, external irritants can also cause pimples, such as leggings that are too tight or the rubbing of a bicycle saddle. Pay close attention to when the pimples appear.

How to prevent pimples in the genital area

  • Change your towels regularly to prevent bacteria from settling in the genital area.
  • When shaving your genital area, always make sure you use a sharp blade and replace it regularly.
  • Care for your skin after shaving with a cooling cream or some baby powder. This should prevent skin irritation.
  • Avoid wearing synthetic underwear. This can also cause skin irritation.
  • Do not use perfumed shower gels in the intimate area, as these can irritate it.

Important: Never press on pimples in the genital area, as this can make the inflammation even worse or lead to blood poisoning! It's better to see a doctor if the pimples won't go away.
