Cannabis ice cream? Ben&Jerry's wants to launch variety with CBD active ingredient

CBD oil has been the talk of the town for a few months now - albeit still controversial. The ice cream manufacturer Ben&Jerry's has now announced that it is planning a new type of ice cream with the cannabis ingredient.

CBD ice cream coming soon?

Half-Baked, Cookie Dough, Strawberry Cheesecake - the American company is known for its unusual ice cream flavors. Now a new ice cream creation could soon be joining the refrigerated shelves. With a picture of a Ben&Jerry's ice cream cup labeled "CBD".

What is behind the active ingredient CBD?

In contrast to hemp seed oil, which has long been used for many cosmetic products, CBD oil is extracted from the flowers of the cannabis plant. However, both substances contain only very small amounts of the intoxicating substance THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). CBD oil is legal as it contains less than 0.2 percent THC. In Germany, cannbidiol oil is already considered a dietary supplement and is therefore available in pharmacies and drugstores. CBD is considered to be antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, it has a pain-relieving and calming effect.

CBD oil banned in food in the USA

It would therefore stand to reason that the oil would soon be in our ice cream and other foods. But before Ben&Jerry's is allowed to launch the new trend variety on the market, the responsible authority, the Food and Drug Administration, must first give its approval. Until now, the US authority has prohibited the use of the active ingredient in food. However, an initial hearing on the possible legalization of CBD was held on 31 May. Ice cream fans will therefore have to wait a little longer.
