When hyperacidity makes losing weight impossible

Only five percent of Germans are happy with their figure. As new study results show, hyperacidity can make losing weight significantly more difficult. Prof. Kuno Hottenrott, Head of the Institute for Performance Diagnostics and Health Promotion at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, explains.

Fruit and vegetables ensure a balanced acid-base balance.

What are the worst mistakes when losing weight?

"Anything that leads to a yo-yo effect, such as a zero diet, total fasting for several days or a radical crash diet. In other words, anything that you can't stick to in the long term - too often your inner bastard wins out. Another bad thing is eating too many meals a day, too much sugar, industrially processed foods such as ready meals, bad fats and too little fruit and vegetables. Because all this usually puts a strain on our acid-base balance, we then lose less weight than we would like. In the long term, it is best for the body if sport and fasting are intelligently combined. In other words, you should plan fasting days alongside sport."

Why does fasting affect the acid-base balance?

"Due to the increased breakdown of fat, more keto acids are formed. This excess acid makes further metabolism more difficult and can slow down the breakdown of fat. Additional alkaline minerals are needed to balance out the acid produced on a daily basis. These are extremely important - as we have now been able to prove with our current study."

How exactly did this study go?

"84 slightly overweight recreational athletes aged between 38 and 53 took part in the study and completed a three-month training program for a ten-kilometre city run. We divided the group into a fasting group and a non-fasting group. Participants in both groups received either a placebo or an alkaline supplement. The two fasting groups had one fasting day per week at the beginning and two fasting days after six weeks."

And what were your findings?

"According to our study, you clearly lose the most weight if you exercise continuously, eat a healthy diet, fast from time to time and take alkaline minerals. In this case, the participants lost an average of 8.3 kilos - those who only did sport, i.e. without fasting and without alkaline minerals, only lost an average of 3.4 kilos."
