Why are AHA fruit acids ideal for mature skin?

You often have the feeling that your skin is tired and dull. Mature skin in particular needs more freshness. And this is exactly what AHA fruit acids can do. AHAs (abbreviation for alpha hydroxy acids) are ideal for activating experience care with an immediate effect. The beauty effects of fruit acids such as lactic acid were already known to Egyptian women at the time of the pharaohs: They bathed in fermented donkey milk.
Anna Tersteeg, cosmetologist from Münster, tells you everything you need to know about AHA fruit acids.

Is it safe to use AHA fruit acids for skin care?

Anna Tersteeg:In principle, yes. It is important to note that skin that is not yet familiar with fruit acids needs to be trained to use them. This means that it must slowly get used to the low pH value of the product and the fruit acid it contains. A slight tingling sensation or activation of the skin is not unusual and is even desirable, as fruit acids make the skin tinglingly beautiful. Fruit acid training makes the skin more stable and strengthens its barrier so that it can eventually be integrated into the daily skincare routine.
You should also choose the right skincare product for your individual skin type. For example, there are mild AHA products with natural fruit acids for sensitive and dry skin.

Why are AHA products particularly suitable for anti-ageing skin care?

Anna Tersteeg: AHA products are real all-rounders for anti-ageing skincare. They remove dead skin cells, stimulate cell renewal and thus ensure a smooth, even complexion. When used regularly, they also stimulate the collagen and elastin fibers in the deeper layers of the skin. Wrinkles are smoothed and the skin appears firmer and more elastic. Fruit acids also regulate the pH value of the skin surface to the optimum range of 4.8 - 5.5.
Fruit acids also strengthen the skin barrier so that less water is lost and the skin can actively bind more moisture. The skin now appears more youthful and fresh.

What could an anti-ageing program with fruit acids look like?

Anna Tersteeg:Every skincare program starts with activating cleansing, for example with a foam. This already contains fruit acids, cleanses deep into the pores and prepares the skin for subsequent care. A skin-soothing toner completes the cleansing process and regulates the pH value. The fruit acid cream suitable for the skin type is then applied to the face as evening care.

A moisturizing cream with a medium sun protection factor is suitable as supplementary day care. This is because the fruit acids dilute the skin's protective light barrier and thus slightly reduce the skin's own protection. In order to protect the skin sufficiently, you should use a higher sun protection factor, for example SPF 50, for longer periods in the sun.

In addition to home care, fruit acids are also offered as chemical peels by dermatologists or beauticians. Here the acids are in higher doses and their effect is even more intensive. Peelings are particularly suitable for skin in need of activation or for treating problem skin. The prerequisite for a peel treatment is preparation with a fruit acid product suitable for the skin type for home care.

Do AHAs also help younger skin?

Anna Tersteeg:AHA products are also used on younger skin, which is often prone to blemishes or dry skin, including in the body area. A light fruit acid emulsion is particularly suitable here, as it dissolves dead skin cells and thus reduces blemishes and blackheads (comedones).
BHAs (beta-hydroxy acids) such as salicylic acid are also suitable for younger skin. They remove horny scales and have an anti-inflammatory effect. They are therefore ideal for blemished, oily skin and acne. The salicylic acid opens the blocked pores, the sebum can drain away and fewer blemishes appear. Existing pustules also heal faster thanks to salicylic acid.

Why is it advisable to combine certain care products with fruit acid care?

Anna Tersteeg:Thanks to their very small molecular structure, fruit acids are able to penetrate deeper into the skin. They dissolve the putty substance between the horny cells and act as a precursor for subsequent active ingredients. This is why the combination of fruit acid and a skin care product is so recommended. For example, the combination of an activating fruit acid cream with a moisturizing and smoothing concentrate is suitable here. The fruit acid product should be applied first, followed by the concentrate.
