Before the old memories fade in the truest sense of the word, you should digitize the photos.

Everyone probably has old photo albums on their shelves. There are also lots of pictures in boxes, cartons and chests. Would you like to finally bring some order to this chaos? If you want to tackle this, you first have to decide whether you want to do it yourself or hand it over to a professional.

Have pictures digitized by a professional

You should consult a professional if you have no technical knowledge or if you have thousands of pictures that need to be digitized. At some point, you're bound to lose your nerve. Providers include: mediafix.de, pixum-scan.de, film-retter.de, fotoporto.de. Just remember: if you hire a company, you have to hand over your old treasures.

Digitize photos yourself with a scanner

If you want to digitize your photos yourself, you can buy a scanner. The "Rollei PDF-S 240 SE" for around 93 euros on Amazon was ideal and rated very highly in the test. It scans photos, negatives and slides - without a computer. You need one if you use a flatbed scanner. The advantage of the latter: You can scan several photos at once.

Photographing with the camera

If you have a digital camera, you can simply photograph your old memories. However, the camera should be able to take high-resolution photos. A sturdy tripod is ideal for taking photos so that nothing shakes. You should never take pictures of old photos with a flash, as it quickly reflects on photos. Instead, it makes sense to use several indirect light sources. This prevents shadow spots. The old photos must always lie flat.

Quick and easy with the photo scanner app

Almost everyone has a smartphone, and an app is quick to download. They are also available for scanning photos (e.g. Photomyne, Google Photo Scanner, Pic Scanner). You can also retouch the photos a little.

New shine through image editing

The old photos naturally have their charm - yellowed and with the odd scratch. Wonderfully retro! But digitally you also have the chance to spruce them up a bit. Get rid of stains, improve image sharpness and make the colors more vibrant. You don't have to be a professional or have expensive Photoshop on your computer. You can also do it with an app.
