Which items count as bulky waste?
"Bulky household waste such as furnishings and household items that do not fit into a garbage can due to their size. For example, disassembled furniture, mattresses, carpets, sports equipment, lamps, mirrors, window frames ... Under no circumstances should you include harmful substances such as used oil, old paint, solvents, asbestos or batteries."
How can I register the items for collection?
"Search the Internet or telephone directory for the municipal waste disposal company responsible for your residential area. You can usually book appointments there not only by phone, but also online, for example for all Berlin households at www.bsr.de. In some large cities, there have unfortunately recently been problems with dubious providers who have demanded high prices in cash as soon as the sofa has been taken downstairs. With municipal waste disposal companies, you can be sure that this won't happen."
What are the approximate costs?
"It varies depending on the city and municipality. In Berlin, private households can take their bulky waste up to three cubic meters to the recycling center free of charge. When we come to collect it, there are three rates, the cheapest of which is 50 euros."
What do I need to consider when I put everything out?
"In Berlin, we collect bulky waste directly from houses or apartments. Some local authorities allow it to be put out on the street. Please only do this in the evening before collection so that the sidewalk is not littered."
What applies when disposing of old electrical appliances?
"Since the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act came into force last July, you can return electrical appliances with an edge length of less than 25 centimetres in normal household quantities free of charge to retailers who sell electrical appliances in an area of 400 square meters - for online retailers, the shipping and storage area applies. In Berlin, we also take electrical appliances with us when collecting bulky waste. This must be specified when booking, as electrical appliances are not compacted and are placed in a special vehicle."
Can I take other people's bulky waste with me?
"Strictly speaking, no: in many municipalities it is forbidden and is therefore considered theft. You must bear in mind that once the bulky waste has been put out for collection, it belongs to the municipality."
