Do parents always have priority when planning vacations?

The vacation is already planned, but the application is still with the boss. Many employees are familiar with this problem and, especially if they are childless, they often lose out. But is this even legal? We explain.

When it comes to vacation planning, colleagues with families often have an advantage.

Patrick M. from Gundelfingen asks:

My wife and I are always early to book our vacations. But not all our colleagues have submitted their wishes for 2017 yet and the boss says he has to consider the wishes of employees with school-age children first. Do parents always have priority?

Answer:

Already. Employers should show special consideration for parents with school-age children. They should be able to take a vacation with their children at least once a year during the vacations. The boss may therefore put other employees' wishes on hold. You will therefore probably have to wait until the vacation is planned for the whole department.

The holidays around Easter and Whitsun are particularly popular, as you have to take two days less vacation for two weeks off. However, if childless employees want to build such vacation bridges, they often lose out.

However, parents are not entitled to take their entire vacation during the vacation period. Tip: Vacation outside the school vacations is more easily approved and is also cheaper.
