Donations in Germany: What do I need to consider?

Of course, it is important to think about those in need at times other than Christmas. But right now, many organizations are counting on our support. Especially around Christmas time, many people in Germany donate or are looking for an organization to donate to. Expert Wiebke Gülcibuk from the non-profit analysis and consultancy firm Phineo, which awards an independent seal of approval for donations, explains how our money really does arrive safely.

Donations in kind are also welcome

There are so many helping organizations, but who is it really safe to donate to in Germany?
"Ask yourself what really matters to you, who you really want to support. Children? The environment? Or development aid? An association locally or abroad? On the websites www.phineo.org and www.dzi.de you can find the right charity for you using search masks."

How do I know if I can trust the organization?
"Look online to see what others say about the organization. And check the website: Does the organization carry a reputable donor seal from the DZI or Phineo? Is it recognized as a non-profit organization and can it prove this with a notice of exemption from the tax office? Transparency is particularly important - for example, annual reports should be published on the website with the organization's goals, progress and successes."

Conversely, when should I become suspicious?
"Organizations that exert pressure - for example at the front door - and don't give you time to think are dubious. Emotional and compassionate advertising material is also rarely trustworthy. You should also be careful with online donations, especially if you are asked to give out your account details by email."

I would like to make donations in kind - what applies here?
"It's best to ask locally or look online to see what is actually needed in the facilities you want to bring something to. Many associations publish lists of what is needed. Summer clothing in winter, for example, is often a lot of work."

Does it make sense to donate lots of small amounts?
"Of course, it's up to you how you distribute the money you want to donate. We recommend giving a larger sum rather than many small ones, as the organization and the bank incur costs for administration and payment processing respectively. It is best to transfer the money or pay by direct debit, which is cheaper than by credit card. Donations to charitable organizations are tax-deductible. Ask for a donation receipt."

Can I specify what should happen with the money?
"Earmarked donations give you a good feeling because they support a very specific cause. However, such donations can also severely restrict an organization's scope for action. Trust that the organization you have deliberately chosen will use the money in a way that best benefits the people or cause it supports."
