It's finally bike season again! With the right tips, you can quickly get your bike back in shape.

The sun is shining and the air is mild, which makes you want to go for a ride. For most people, however, the bike has probably spent the last few months in the cellar or garage and now needs a check-up. But you can easily do it yourself.

Clean your bike properly

Start by thoroughly removing dirt, grime and dust. This works best with a special bike cleaner, which you spray on and leave to work for a short time. Wipe off with a cloth. An old toothbrush is good for getting into nooks and crannies.

Brakes

Functioning brakes are vital and must be checked. The pads should be at least one millimeter thick, otherwise new ones must be fitted. This also applies if only one side is worn or cracked. The brake pads on rim brakes wear out quickly - replace them now if necessary. Disc brakes need to be replaced by a specialist. Treat stiff brake cables with penetrating grease (DIY store).

Gear shifting

Shift through each gear once and check that it engages securely. If this is not the case, the so-called shifting tension must be increased. The best way to do this is to go to your nearest bike store: The adjustment is quite complicated, especially with derailleur gears.

Tires & rims

Check whether the tire has cracks or damage. If so, it should be replaced. And even if there is no hole in the inner tube, air can escape over time. If the tire can be pushed in more than one centimeter, it should be inflated. Inflate them very hard, otherwise they will wear out more quickly. Turn the wheel upside down, spray a detergent solution on the rims and spokes, leave to work in and clean with a toothbrush.

Bicycle chain

Clean thoroughly with a coarse brush or run through and clean with a cloth. Then apply chain oil to make pedaling easier again. To do this, turn the bike upside down and turn the pedals with one hand. This distributes everything evenly. Also check whether the screws on the pedals, handlebars and saddle are still tight enough.

Adjust correctly

The saddle height is ideal for you if you place your foot on the pedal with your heel and your knee is pressed through. The handlebar height varies depending on your riding style: leisure cyclists often prefer a more upright position. The width is more important: it should be at least as wide as your shoulders.

Light

Even if lighting is no longer mandatory during the day, it should of course be intact. If nothing lights up, it is usually due to the bulb or a loose cable. Recharge clip-on lights or replace batteries.

For e-bikes

In principle, you can clean and check bikes with electric assistance in the same way as "normal" models. Nevertheless, it is advisable to call in a professional once a year. The hydraulic brakes, computer, software and battery all require maintenance.

Safety

Important basic rule: make yourself visible. Ride on the road at least one meter away from the sidewalk. Make eye contact with other road users and give hand signals every time you change direction.

Extra tip

You can also have your bike checked by a specialist dealer for around 60 euros. Inexpensive alternative: Experienced hobbyists provide support in self-help workshops.
