High accident risk: Are electric bikes underestimated too often?

It's unbelievable how the bicycle market has developed! That's what Baron von Drais would think if he were born again. He invented the first two-wheeler in 1817. 200 years later, it is not only available in high-quality materials, but also with an auxiliary motor! However, so-called e-bikes harbor a risk that should not be underestimated.

Electric bikes are becoming increasingly popular. But are they safe?

The small drive assistance of electric bikes enables mobility into old age, even with physical impairments. This is why pedelecs, as electric bikes are also known, are so popular, especially among senior citizens.

Nevertheless, there is one downside: last year, the number of pedelec accidents rose to 3,214 from January to September - 46 people even died as a result. By comparison, there were 2,313 accidents a year earlier.

Why is that?

There are more and more pedelecs on the road. What's more, as we get older, our ability to react and coordinate decreases, which is not always safe at speeds of up to 25 km/h. This can quickly lead to a crash. This can quickly lead to a crash and serious injuries, especially to the head. The German Society for Trauma Surgery (DGOU) therefore advises: It is better to ride with a helmet! This can cushion a fall onto the head and reduce the risk of fatal head injuries by 60 to 70 percent. When buying a helmet, make sure that it complies with the DIN EN 1078 standard. Safety training is also a good idea. This is often offered by the local road safety organization.
