Is tap water healthy?

Turn on the tap and off you go: Pure water is essential for us. Because it regulates our cardiovascular function and our digestion, is a solvent for salts and minerals, transports nutrients and decomposition products and regulates our heat balance. In short, it is our elixir of life. But is tap water healthy? Can I drink it without hesitation? We explain.

How healthy is tap water?

Strict controls The local water suppliers filter the groundwater until pollutants such as nitrate or bacteria have been removed. The Federal Environment Agency regularly has samples of tap water tested, 99 percent of which were rated "very good" in the last study. Additional filter systems in the home are therefore unnecessary: our tap water is safe and therefore healthy!

Check pipes Lead pipes were often installed in buildings built at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century in particular. These are harmful to health as the lead can get into the drinking water. Since 2014, landlords have been obliged to replace lead pipes in apartments. If you are unsure, it is best to ask.
