Kitchen appliance tips: Which little helpers do I really need?

The food processor has long since found its way into the majority of German households. But do we really need them? And what about steam cookers, egg stoves and the like? Are these kitchen appliances worthwhile for me? The E.ON energy experts have an overview of kitchen appliances. Where can I save time and energy?

How to save money when cooking

The kitchen accounts for over 25 percent of the electricity consumption of an average three-person household. This amounts to around 251 euros per year,

knows E.ON Managing Director Dr. Wolfgang Noetel.

How can this amount be minimized? With intelligent kitchen appliances. But are food processors, pressure cookers and the like really worth it for me? When buying kitchen appliances, the main thing is of course that you actually use them. After all, no little helper, no matter how energy-saving, is worthwhile if it is gathering dust on the shelf. You may have to invest initially, but with most appliances you will have recouped the purchase price after just a few years. This is the case with pressure cookers, for example, as a simple calculation shows:

Cooking 500 g of potatoes, consumption 0.137 kwh, daily, pressure cooker 50% saving: (0.137*365*0.27)/2 =6.75 euros around 7 euros.

-> A pressure cooker starts at just 40 euros, which means that the purchase will have paid for itself after just a few years.

How to continue saving energy: dispose of old kitchen appliances

The worst energy guzzlers in the kitchen are the fridge and freezer. Especially if they have been around for a few years and do not meet the latest energy standards, i.e. have the label A instead of A+++, they are quite a burden on your wallet. An old refrigerator can consume up to 500 kilowatt hours a year. In comparison, newer appliances only need around 80 kilowatt hours a year. This can save you over 100 euros a year.
