Since the hacker attack on the German parliament, it has been clear that no one is safe from internet fraudsters. Nevertheless, it is possible to optimize security when shopping online. Shopping for shoes, ordering books, buying movie tickets - we do it all conveniently online these days. The problem is that if we give out our account details, they can fall into the wrong hands. We explain how to keep your money safe.

How can I tell if an online store is reputable?

Always check the legal notice. Are the company address and telephone number correct? You can also google the store. What experiences have other buyers had? Very important during the payment process: Your data must be transmitted in encrypted form. You can recognize this by the fact that the web address does not begin with http, but with https. Another criterion for security when shopping online: once you have completed the purchase, only part of the credit card or account number you entered should appear on the screen.

Secure online payment: Which payment method is the most secure?

Security when shopping online is guaranteed by paying after receiving the goods - by invoice. However, not all stores offer this option. In general, direct debit or credit card payment is also secure: but never give out PINs or TANs. Reputable providers will not ask you for them. Practical: Some credit card companies offer prepaid credit cards. With these, you can only spend as much as you have previously paid into your credit card account.

What do I do if too much is debited?

The money is not lost. You can dispute incorrect transactions with your bank or credit card company - online or by telephone. But beware: the deadline is often just a few weeks. For more security when shopping online, always keep a close eye on your bank accounts. After a successful hacker attack, you should change your user account details, especially the password, with the respective online retailer.

Security when shopping online: Is it less secure if I pay with my cell phone?

No, the end device doesn't matter. It is more important to check that it is updated regularly and that the data is transmitted in encrypted form.

Should I prefer to store online at home?

Yes, access via Wi-Fi at home is more secure than public hotspots. Provided it is secured with a password. Data can always be read on the public network.

How important is an antivirus program?

Very important - it protects your data and ensures greater security when shopping online. You can obtain an overview of current programs free of charge at www.av-test.org. Important: update regularly and only buy or download from trustworthy sources - from the manufacturer, specialist retailers or well-known online retailers. Further information on data security can be found at www.bsi-fuer-buerger.de.

What are Paypal, Clickbuy and co. good for?

These payment systems have one advantage: you only have to log in once with your data and only have to enter your user name and password for online stores - but no longer your account details. The disadvantage is that the systems are susceptible to phishing. Criminals try to steal your data using fake websites.

Extra info: How phishing works

Fraudsters send false e-mails, pretending to be a bank or online store, for example. For example, they ask you to update your account details or passwords and redirect you to a fake website. Never give out your data! Reputable companies would not ask you to do so.
