There are still too few organ donors in Germany. More than 12,000 people are waiting for a life-saving organ every year. But many are still hesitant: How safe is organ donation after the scandals of recent years? One thing is now certain: The organ allocation system is being monitored more strictly. What else do you need to know? We have the most important answers.
Organ removal - even if I am not yet dead?
Brain death is always the medical prerequisite for organ removal. This must be determined independently by two qualified doctors. This rules out misuse. In addition, the doctors need the patient's declaration of consent - in the form of an organ donor card or another written declaration. If this is not available, the next of kin must decide.
Can anyone become an organ donor?
In principle, yes. There is also no age limit. Whether the organs are suitable for transplantation depends on the condition of the donor. However, patients with acute cancer or HIV disease are excluded as donors after their death.
How do I restrict organ donation?
This is always possible - even without justification. There is a special field on the organ donor card where you can exclude certain organs and tissue types or make a specific note.
Can I change my mind?
Yes, at any time. You can simply destroy the card or change the declaration on the donor card. There is also the option to specifically deny organ donation.
Which organs can be donated?
Heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas and intestines as well as some tissue types.
Where should I keep the ID card?
It is best to always carry your ID card with you. It works very well in your wallet. You can also inform your relatives about your will.
