Slatted frames in the test: what you need to look out for

A mattress is only as good as the slatted frame on which it lies - or so the saying goes. But according to Stiftung Warentest, this is not true at all. Ten slatted frames ranging from 12 euros (Ikea) to more than 1,000 euros were tested by the testers - with surprising results.

Does a slatted frame really improve sleep? Stiftung Warentest found out: no!

Hardly any positive change in comfort

They wanted to find out whether the lying properties of a mattress are actually optimized by the slatted frame. The sobering result: none of the ten models tested really improved the lying properties of the mattress on top! There was hardly any positive change in comfort, especially with very thick mattresses. Depending on the
sleeping position, the slatted frame even had a negative effect.

Simply build your own slatted frame

The slatted frame built by the testers themselves with material from the DIY store for around 35 euros even fulfilled the purpose of a slatted frame better in some cases. The ventilation of the mattress from below is particularly important. The gaps between the individual slats should not be less than six centimeters wide so that the air can circulate.
