Sour makes you funny? And how! The fruity aroma of lemons releases happiness hormones in us, making us feel exhilarated. And even if we might not want to eat a whole lemon, drizzling a little of its juice over some dishes - mmmh, that makes for an intense taste experience. Practical side effect: lemons contain a lot of pectin - we feel full faster. Not to mention that they strengthen our immune system, detoxify and have an antibacterial effect. The peel also contains many valuable essential oils. Due to its five percent acidity, lemon juice is also suitable as a versatile, environmentally friendly cleaning agent in the home: grease, rust and mildew stains disappear if you dab them with lemon juice, leave it to work overnight and then wash your clothes as usual. A sliced lemon half in the fridge combats mustiness, just like in the dishwasher. So: small but powerful. Lemons are true all-rounders.
A large lemon contains 75% of our daily vitamin C requirement. But please don't pour boiling water over it - this destroys the vitamins.
The land where it blossoms ...
The lemon originally comes from the north-east of India and then spread to China and the Mediterranean region. It grows on a small to medium-sized evergreen tree. In warm and humid conditions, it flowers and bears fruit all year round. The skin is usually green when ripe - before lemons reach our market, they are treated so that they turn yellow.
Fresh fragrance
A lemon half studded with cloves - an effective, inexpensive and environmentally friendly alternative to room sprays. Practical: the aroma, which we find pleasantly fresh, repels annoying insects such as flies or, in summer, mosquitoes.
Clean chopping boards
Smelly boards will smell wonderfully fresh again if you rub them with a sliced lemon. This even works on onion and garlic smells. And: the juice of the lemon disinfects at the same time.
Simply descale
Coffee machines and kettles can be descaled quickly and easily with lemon juice. Fill the coffee machine with 2 teaspoons of juice and the kettle with the juice of half a lemon. Pour in water and bring to the boil, rinse thoroughly.
