Perhaps we should have refrained from having that last glass of champagne after all. But we prefer to drink in good company, and even more so on New Year's Eve. After all, the start of the new year and the farewell to the old one must be celebrated in style.

The receipt for this terse attitude comes the next day. We wake up with an unbearable headache and nausea and don't start the new year as fresh and motivated as we had once again planned.

1. make sure you have a good foundation with a meal containing as much fat as possible
2. stay away from sweet drinks, they make your head spin
3. drink an alcohol-free bitters in between
4. avoid cigarettes, as the combination of alcohol and nicotine makes the hangover worse
5. drink a glass of water with every glass of alcohol

Against the hangover

6. salty foods replace the lost minerals
7. put some peppermint oil on your temples, it brings freshness and provides relaxation
8. if you don't have a headache tablet to hand, you can alternatively have an espresso with a shot of lemon
9. go out into the fresh air
10. parsley leaves help against bad breath
