What can go in the tumble dryer?
In general, anything that has a corresponding label on the washing label - this is sewn into every item of clothing - can go in the dryer. If the symbol is crossed out, the garment is taboo for the machine. The following items of laundry are considered safe:
- Towels
- Kitchen towels and cleaning cloths
- Bed linen, comforters and pillows
- Cotton underwear
- Socks (no wool!)
Although tumble dryers with a temperature reduction are gentler than models without, it is still advisable not to put everything in the tumble dryer.
Do not tumble dry
Silk clothing
This natural fabric is very sensitive to heat and can become permanently creased, threadbare or even break.
Denim jeans
Although they are made of cotton, they suffer due to their weave and can shrink.
Shirts with prints
These are usually plastic prints that can melt and then stain other items and the drum itself. The same applies to knitted socks.
Wool knitwear and fabrics
Pure wool tends to shrink, felt and form pills. Only specially treated items (observe the cleaning symbol) can be dried or refreshed on a gentle cycle at low temperatures, if available.
Coated fabrics
Raincoats or bed underlays become brittle and the coating can melt when exposed to high temperatures.
Shoulder pads and bras
Padding loses its shape and becomes hard. The hooks of bras easily damage other parts.
They also do not belong in the tumble dryer:
Metal buttons, rivets
They hit even harder than bra hooks and can even dent the laundry drum.
Curtains and lace
Synthetics in particular will not even survive drying. But cotton or linen lace also frays quickly and disintegrates.
Wax, grease and paint
Beware, clothing soiled with these can even cause a fire in the machine!
Favorite pieces and high-quality lingerie
Even if you could theoretically put them in the tumble dryer: Favorite items or high-quality lingerie should be hung on the line to ensure a long shelf life.
