Washing sneakers: how it works
- Many sneakers and sneakers made of synthetic fabric can be machine washed at 30 degrees and a low spin speed, never at higher temperatures. Excessively high temperatures can, for example, cause the glue on the sole to come loose or the shoes to shrink. Even at low temperatures, it is always possible for the shoes to be damaged in the washing machine. So it's better not to experiment with your favorite shoes or expensive sneakers. If you want to be on the safe side, it's better to wash or clean your shoes by hand.
- Before washing, read the label inside the shoes for washing recommendations.
- Before they go into the machine, the shoes should be roughly cleaned of dirt. To do this, remove the dirt with a brush.
- There are even washing machines that have an extra wash cycle for sports shoes, which you should of course use. If there is no extra program, don't worry: simply select the "delicate wash" or "easy care" program.
- Never put leather shoes or shoes with leather content in the washing machine. These must be cleaned by hand.
- Shoes with metal elements, buckles, rivets or rhinestones also have no place in the washing machine.
- Do not wash sneakers together with normal clothing.
- To wash them, put them in a pillowcase or in a special washing bag for sneakers. Store for a well-rated model here. Provide additional padding in the machine by adding a few towels or sheets to prevent damage to the drum.
- Remove the insole, laces and other loose parts before washing.
- It is best to wash your sneakers using a normal heavy-duty or mild detergent. Fabric softener is not suitable for sneakers as it can make the material of the shoes porous.
- In general, sneakers should not be machine washed too often.
- Allow the shoes to dry well after washing. Stuff the shoes with newspaper to preserve their shape. Feel free to replace the paper once during the drying process. In addition, do not place the shoes on a radiator or blow-dry them.
