
They fly over gardens, into offices and deliver parcels: Drones are finding their way into our everyday lives. Over 400,000 so-called multicopters are in use in this country. Very few hobby pilots are aware that rights apply to the use of drones. This must be taken into account when using them:
Are there legal rules for drone pilots?
These have been issued by German air traffic control. One of the most important rules is: If you fly a drone, you must still be able to see it with the naked eye. Drones may not fly closer than 1.5 kilometers to an airport fence. There is an absolute ban on flying over crowds, hospitals, power stations and military areas. If the owner does not comply, he or she may face a fine or even a prison sentence.
Is extra insurance necessary when flying a drone in Germany?
A pilot needs personal liability insurance. Personal liability insurance does not usually cover possible claims. Additional insurance costs from 40 euros.
Can you take photos of houses and people?
Only if you have permission to do so or if it is your own house. If you take photos in your neighbor's garden without asking, you are violating their right to privacy. This is therefore a punishable offense. Photographing buildings from above could constitute an infringement of an architect's copyright. The legal situation here has not yet been precisely clarified.
Where is the best place to fly drones?
It is safest to fly the multicopter on a model airfield or on your own property.
Can anyone fly drones in Germany?
In principle, yes, if it weighs less than five kilos and is not used commercially. However, young people should only do this under the supervision of an adult.
What do you do if a drone gets out of control?
Inform German air traffic control or the police immediately.
