What am I allowed to do in the supermarket?

There are a lot of rumors circulating about store rules. Our expert has put them under the microscope.

Quickly snacking on blackberries or reading the newspaper in the "Lea" - how far can you go when shopping? Can I try fruit before I buy it? No, from a purely legal point of view this is theft. However, if small tasting plates are set up, you are of course allowed to take a bite. Incidentally, there is no limit: if there is a plate of cherries for customers, you are theoretically allowed to eat it all.

  • I drop some ketchup - do I have to replace it?

Even if many supermarkets turn a blind eye to this, you generally have to replace the ketchup bottle - regardless of whether you drop it on purpose or accidentally. However, if you knock over goods because they are not properly secured, for example, the supermarket is at fault - and the customer does not have to pay for the damage.

  • Can I open products to check them?

Yes, as long as you don't damage the packaging. Smell the shower gel, open the egg carton... That's no problem. However, if you open something that has been taped or shrink-wrapped, you will have to pay for it. It's particularly tricky with food packaging - once opened, it can no longer be sold on to other customers.

  • Can I drink the soda before paying?

No, because strictly speaking you are damaging property - both the packaging and the contents. As long as you pay for the goods at the end, most supermarkets are accommodating - but you shouldn't risk any trouble.

  • Can I just read the newspapers?

Yes - because you are basically just checking the goods more closely. You can even do this if you don't intend to buy the newspaper. However, if you damage the magazine while reading it, you will of course have to pay for it.

  • Can I use my own bag when shopping?

That depends on the bag. If you put something in your pants, jacket or another tight-fitting bag, you are committing theft. This is because nobody can see inside - the goods have been removed from the supermarket, so to speak. Putting your shopping in an open basket, on the other hand, is fine. However, I recommend using the supermarket baskets or trolleys to be on the safe side.

  • Can I take the trolley home with me for a short time?

No, you are not allowed to take the shopping home with you. The trolley belongs to the supermarket - and should only be used on its premises. Of course, you did not buy it with the euro you put in.

  • Can my bags be searched?

No, this is an invasion of privacy. Supermarket staff are not allowed to simply ask you to open your bag - even if they suspect that you may have stolen something. Exception: The employee has observed the theft with their own eyes - or the police are called in.
