Which examinations are worth paying extra for?

Glaucoma: It is the second most common cause of blindness worldwide. If glaucoma remains undetected, the optic nerve can be irreversibly damaged. Checking the intraocular pressure every two years costs patients 10 to 40 euros. This IGeL service makes sense.

Dental cleaning: According to many dentists, you should have your teeth and interdental spacescleaned and plaque removed by a professional once a year. This should prevent periodontitis. It also makes your teeth look better. Costs: between 35 and 120 euros. This IGeL service makes sense.

Ovarian ultrasound: If ovarian cancer is suspected, the health insurance will pay for it. In healthy women, there is often a false alarm and healthy ovaries are sometimes removed. Annual palpation of the ovaries from the age of 20 is sufficient. This IGeL service is superfluous.

Hormone status: As hormone levels fluctuate, a measurement of hormones in the blood can only be a snapshot. The doctor can prescribe hormone therapy for symptoms based on the patient's information even without a hormone status. This IGeL service is superfluous.

Breast ultrasound: This is only appropriate for women with extremely dense breast tissue where it is not possible to tell whether they have a tumor on an X-ray. However, an ultrasound examination alone cannot replace a breast mammogram. On the contrary, sometimes tumors are discovered that do not require surgery. The examination costs between 30 and 60 euros. euros. This IGeL service is sometimes useful.
