In contrast to serging, which is usually used to protect inside edges from fraying, binding is useful for garments, blankets or bags with outside edges. A bias tape is used for this, which you can find in any specialist store. Advanced sewers can also make their own.
Edging with bias tape also leaves room for a little creativity. Bias tape in contrasting colors or other patterns to the fabric used creates a pretty eye-catcher at the hem.
Learn to sew simply: binding made easy
Edges that are hemmed with bias tape do not require seam allowances. The raw edge is placed directly between the tape and edged.
Learning how to hem: here's how
To hem the desired edge, unfold the bias tape and place it on the edge of the wrong side of the fabric. Now sew about 1 mm along the fold.
Now place the tape around the edge of the fabric and fold in on the right side. Sew the bias tape close to the edge from the right side.
