Learning to overlock: How to make your seam last longer
Have you successfully finished your first seam? To prevent the seam allowance from fraying and risking the seam unraveling at some point, it is advisable to neaten the edges.
Neatening, also known as "finishing" or "hemming", can be done using a zigzag stitch on the sewing machine, for example. This is particularly suitable for beginners to protect the fabric from fraying.
For more robust fabrics and an inside seam, it is advisable to trim the edge of the fabric beforehand with pinking shears.
Neatening: this is how it works
Set the zigzag stitch as the stitch type on the sewing machine. A medium stitch length and width is recommended.
Place the fabric in such a way that the needle always penetrates the fabric once and once just next to it into the void and follow the seam you have previously sewn.
