Sewing in a zipper made easy
We admit that sewing in a zipper is not one of the easiest exercises in sewing. However, the zipper concealed on both sides is still the easiest.
So if you haven't quite dared to try it yet, we'll take away your fears here, because with the right instructions, it shouldn't be a problem at all. In the following, we will tell you which presser foot you should use to sew in the double-sided concealed zipper and what you should pay attention to.
What is the double-sided concealed zipper suitable for?
While the concealed zipper is mainly used for elegant garments, the concealed zipper on both sides is ideal for sportier tops or cushion covers. A polyester zipper with a plastic spiral is usually sewn in for this purpose. A metal zipper is well suited for bags, pants or jackets.
Sewing instructions for beginners: how it works
- First lay the zipper lengthwise to measure the length and mark about 1 cm above the end with tailor's chalk. Mark 1 cm seam allowance on both pieces of fabric along the edge.
- Pin the pieces of fabric together, right sides facing, and sew together up to the marking.
- Fold the seam allowances over at the seam and press apart. Now position the zipper in the middle and pin in place so that the folded edges cover the zipper.
- Use a zipper presser foot to position the seam as close as possible to the zipper. Sew along the pins about half a centimeter from the folded edge.
- Leave the presser foot down and turn the fabric 90 degrees and sew up to 0.5 cm to the other side. Turn the fabric 90 degrees again and sew the other side along the pins.
